This artist was born in 1754, one of twelve children. His father was also known as the Reverend Christopher Atkinson. Our artist was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and became Fellow and Tutor of Trinity Hall and Vicar of Wetherfield, Essex. He was one of the original Methodists. He married his wife, Catherine, in 1785. She was the sister of Lord de Tabley, Sir John Fleming Leicester, who was the first great collector of British paintings. The Reverend and Mrs. Atkinson had two sons and four daughters. One of the artist’s siblings, Miles Atkinson, became well known as an English divine, publishing several pulpit discourses and a collection of Practical Sermons.
Aside from his religious and educational duties the Reverend Christopher Atkinson was a fine artist, particularly of birds. His original sketches and paintings are highly collectable and quite rare. A number of publishing houses sell fine art prints of his works, but we presented the rare opportunity to acquire a fine original work.
